Our city cannot simply be visited. It must be experienced, and savoured, like a good glass of Amarone. And there is no better way to do it than by diving into its family-run taverns and osterias. In this article, we want to collect the Verona taverns that we love most, where you can taste the true flavor of the city and, why not, feel a bit like a Veronese yourself.
1. Osteria Sottoriva
Osteria Sottoriva – Located in the picturesque medieval district of Sottoriva, this osteria is a true hidden gem frequented mainly by locals. With its vaulted ceilings and stone walls, it feels like entering another era. Here, traditional Veronese dishes are served with a touch of modernity, always following the season.

2. Osteria al Duca
In the heart of the historic centre, a stone’s throw from the Scaliger Tombs and Juliet’s House, is Osteria al Duca, a small jewel set in the historic district. Famous for its homemade Veronese cuisine, here you can savour a stellar “pastissada de caval”. It is a typical dish based on stewed horse meat. Don’t be fooled by its modest appearance: this place will surprise you.

3. Osteria le Petarine
Hidden among the streets of the “Ancient City”, Osteria a le Petarine is a refuge for those looking for something authentic and away from the tourist crowd. The place is small and welcoming, and the walls tell stories of times gone by. Here you will find traditional dishes such as “bigoi with anara” and polenta with soppressa.

4. Osteria Trota da Luciano
Near Piazze dei Signori, Trattoria Trota da Luciano is one of those rare pearls recognized by the Municipality as a “bottega storica Verona“. Here, fish cuisine is a serious business. The main dish? Polenta with creamed cod! But even the risottos and meat first courses are not bad. It’s the classic place you find by chance, but once you discover it, you never leave it again.

5. Osteria ai Osei
In the Veronetta district, Osteria ai Osei is a place that exudes history and tradition. The name derives from the small birds (osei in Veronese dialect) used as the main ingredient in the local gastronomic tradition. The atmosphere is warm and familiar, perfect for a quiet evening in good company.

6. Trattoria la Molinara
Easily reachable from Piazza delle Erbe we find Trattoria la Molinara. Here the atmosphere is that of a welcoming country house, and the cuisine reflects this feeling: genuine, robust, and unforgettable. The artfully made tortellini are a real delight, and the house wine completes the experience. It’s the perfect place for a Sunday family lunch, or to feel part of the family.

7. Osteria da Morandin
If you are in the Borgo Venezia area and want something authentic, stop by Osteria da Morandin. This is the place where the people of Verona take refuge from the frenzy of the centre, thanks to homemade cuisine that follows traditions. You can’t leave without trying the bigoli with donkey meat (bigoi col muso), prepared as they used to be. The place is simple, no frills, but the food speaks for itself.

8. Trattoria dalla Bruna
Trattoria dalla Bruna – Not far from the Borgo Trento Hospital we found the best fresh pasta we have ever eaten. This restaurant is a third-generation trattoria specializing in home cooking.

9. Hostaria Vecchia Fontanina
Reachable on foot from Piazza delle Erbe and the Basilica of Santa Anastasia, we find Hostaria Vecchia Fontanina. This place has a black belt of classic and traditional cuisine, strictly like that of my great-grandmother. Choose one of the thousand ways to taste from the menu. Horse meat or donkey meat. It is the ideal place for those looking for a Veronese culinary experience with an edge.

10. Trattoria Pane e Vino
Trattoria Pane e Vino – Not far from Piazza delle Erbe there is a trattoria officially recognized as a typical restaurant of Verona. This trattoria tends more towards the sophisticated and the strong point is the traditional Amarone risotto.
