Verona by bike: urban adventures on two wheels. Guide to the city’s semi-cyclable routes.

Bike travel in the city offers greatly reduces travel time from one pont of interest and the next. A good way to save time and have an adventure-filled experience arount the city.

To experience Verona by bike smoothly, it is best to know the best routes, which roads have excessive car traffic, with forbidden access or which ones are difficult to navigate.

For those who have chosen to live a bike-friendly holiday, Verona offers various options for getting easily away from the city and quickly immersing yourself in nature. Day trips with destinations that are always different and unexpected.

Verona by bike

Cycling routes are scattered throughout the urban landscape and let you move cross the city with ease. Several routes make it possible to travel on lanes completely separated from car traffic. Other routes allow bicycles and pedestrians to travel on the same lane with adequate space for both.

Our first advice is to move with caution, having an eye of regard for pedestrians.

The street signage has some flaws, so it is a good idea to study the route on a map before you hop on your bike. Asking other cyclists for directions is highly recommended: those who already use these roads will be able to give you useful information on sudden turns ahead.

The second tip is to ask for help, local cyclists will be happy to give you precious advice.

Parking a bike in the city centre is very easy. You can find numerous parking spaces all around for maximum reliability when parking.

Third tip: always use a secure system to lock your bicycle.

Main routes

FIAB Verona is the leading organisation for bike travellers. On their site you can find a lot of useful information for tourists who love to pedal, including the city’s Cycling Map, where you can see the cycling and pedestrian routes.

A useful resource for understanding how to get through the city with confidence.

The same information, worded slightly differently, can also be found on the Municipality website.

To be precise

Keep in mind: some streets in Verona downtown, while beautiful and picturesque, are narrow and slightly challenging for bike tourism. Two streets in particular forbid access to bicycles, in the first place unless you intend to walk with your bike. They are Via Cappello, where Juliet’s House is located, and Via Mazzini shopping lane.

Both roads are very pedestrian-traffic heavy, which makes it very dangerous to ride a bike. We strongly recommend that you respect these restrictions and park your bike in the designated spaces if you intend to go there.

Verona and surroundings by bike

Biking away from Verona, the landscape will quickly change and you will find yourself immersed in nature. Hills with endless vineyards, the course of the Adige River winding through the lowlands, the Lessinia area with its untouched landscapes.

The routes vary in difficulty and it is wise to prepare in advance to avoid nasty surprises. Here are some destination ideas:

Villa Buri, bike lane along the Adige river

Just outside the city, nestling at a bend in the river is Villa Bernini Buri. This building, with its adjoining park, is a popular place for the Verona natives, who frequent it to throw outdoor parties, picnics or barbecues.

The route to be followed is all on a level with paved and unpaved roads. There is a trail that, if followed to the end, can also take you beyond the Villa and discover the natural wonders on the banks of the Adige.

Ciclovia del Sole

Following the Eurovelo 7 route you can cycle across Europe! It is called the Ciclovia del Sole, and it is a project that will connect the North Cape to the island of Malta.

This amazing cycling project gives you the chance to pedal for miles and miles without seeing even one car.

If you follow this road, you can head north and reach Lake Garda or the main cities of the Trentino region. Heading south instead, the route will take you towards the city of Mantua. In both cases, nature will be the protagonist of the journey with suggestive panoramas to be experienced to the full.

Here’s some useful links

La Pissarotta

Are you looking for an alternative route, perhaps with a bit of a kick to it? Here you will find what you are looking for. This is a loop route with a positive altitude difference of around 750m. A minimum of preparation is needed and it requires around 3 hours of cycling and a lot of fun.

Follow this route

Us local cyclists consider this route a classic. On one side you will pass the Pissarotta, an ancient, long yet uniform road, surrounded by green. On the other side is the Piccolo Stelvio, a steep, unpaved road which is speckled with narrow paths and hairpin bends.
